A logo that looks perfect on your screen can suddenly come out grainy, blurry or ragged when printed. That has almost always the same cause: the file supplied was a pixel file (JPG or PNG), while print work calls for a vector file. The difference between the two is fundamental, and understanding it saves you time, money and frustration.
Making your logo print-ready: why a vector file makes all the difference

Pixels versus mathematical lines
A JPG or PNG is made up of a fixed grid of colour dots (pixels). Enlarge the image, and those dots simply get stretched along with it: the result is a grainy, "pixelated" image. A vector file works completely differently. It describes shapes as mathematical lines, curves and areas. Whether you put the logo on a business card or on a site sign 3 metres wide, the lines stay perfectly sharp, because they're recalculated every time instead of stretched.
Which file formats are vector?
The most common vector formats are AI (the working file for Adobe Illustrator), EPS and SVG. A PDF is a bit of a trap: a PDF can contain vector content, but it might just as easily contain only an embedded pixel image. So the file extension alone doesn't tell you everything.

I only have a PNG. What now?
No need to panic: this happens more often than you'd think, especially with logos made years ago by an old agency or an online tool. This is usually a limited, one-off cost, and afterwards you'll have a future-proof version of your logo for good.
Do you always need a vector file?
Not necessarily. For small format printing such as business cards or flyers, a pixel file is often enough, as long as the resolution is high enough. For large format printing such as site signs, banners or roll-up banners, a vector file is virtually essential: those formats enlarge your logo dozens of times over, and every imperfection gets visibly magnified along with it.
